NMAI INVITED BY SHANGHAI ART
MUSEUM TO SHARE "SISTER
MUSEUM" STATUS
     Mr.
Zhang
Zhe
(Deputy
Director General of the Shanghai Municipal
Government Administration of Culture, Radio, Film
and TV) announced during a two-day official visit to
the
National Museum of American illustration (NMAI) in
June that the Shanghai Art Museum (SAM) would
be honored if the NMAI accepted its invitation to
share "Sister Museum" status. "This invitation marks a
major
international advancement of the NMAI, American
illustration art and our culture," stated
Laurence Cutler, Chairman and Co-founder of the
NMAI.
The
NMAI hosted a group of
Shanghai Art Museum (SAM) principals, Shanghai
Government officials and Shanghai Art Research
Institute personnel on June 6/7, 2007 for the purpose
of discussing
the up-coming exhibition of American illustration art,
which the
NMAI is organizing at the SAM in February 2008.
"The visit was a tremendous success," stated
Judy Goffman Cutler, Director
and Co-founder of the
NMAI. "Cultural barriers always disintegrate due to
the universal language of art and this is especially
so
with American illustration art because its iconic
imagery is recognizable on a global
scale."

     On the
evening of
June 6th, the NMAI founders and Board
Members, along with the
Shanghai Art
Delegation, enjoyed a festive reception dinner, held
in the NMAI's beautiful Rose Garden Loggia. Gifts
were
presented to each
member of the Delegation and speeches were made
regarding the NMAI's and the SAM's newly proposed
"Sister Museum" status. The Astors' Beechwood
Theatre Company provided operatic arias as part of
the evening's entertainment.

     On
June 7th, Laurence and Judy
Cutler led
the Shanghai
Art Delegation
on a tour of the NMAI's
'American Imagist Collection' and also gave the
group a
preview of
artworks which will be included in the exhibition
at the SAM opening next February 2008. The
Delegation then
joined the Cutlers for a
business luncheon
and later went on a sight-seeing tour of historic
Newport.
"The up-coming exhibition of
American illustration art in China is a major
confirmation of our success in promoting American
illustration art to a global audience and a great
plaudit for our young museum. We are very pleased
with the
developing relationship
between the NMAI and the SAM and we look forward
to a future which holds many cultural
exchanges," stated Laurence Cutler.

The National Museum of
American Illustration is a
nonprofit,
independent, educational and aesthetic
organization. It is
located in Newport, RI on Bellevue Avenue at Vernon
Court
(1898), a Beaux-Arts adaptation of an 18th century
French
chateau built by architects, Carreré & Hastings. It is
the first national museum devoted
exclusively
to American illustration art. Illustration consists of
original
artwork created to be reproduced in books,
magazines,
newspapers and advertisements. 'Golden Age'
paintings by
such luminaries as Norman Rockwell, Maxfield
Parrish, NC
Wyeth, and 75 others are displayed in 'Gilded Age'
architecture, creating a unique union of art and
architecture-
a national treasure. The Museum is administered by
the
American Civilization Foundation, a nonprofit
organization
with the goal to present the best possible venue for
appreciating the greatest collection of illustration art;
the
most American of American art.
